Information
Mount Ophir (Gunung Ledang)
Mount Ophir (or Gunung Ledang) is a 1,276 m tall mountain situated at northwest Johor in Malaysia. Gunung Ledang National Park lies just inside Johor’s border with Melaka state, about 30 km from the town of Muar. It is one of the most popular and challenging mountains in Malaysia that can be done in a day; commonly used as a training ground for aspiring mountain trekkers.
From the North-South Expressway, the turn-off point is 25 km after Ayer Keroh. Head towards Tangkak. Proceed along the pastoral Route 23 for another 6 km, past Sagil town, before turning left onto a road in a rubber plantation and proceed another 1 km. From here, the route to the foot of Gunung Ledang or Mount Ophir should be visible.
There are various legends pertaining to the mountain involving a magical princess, gold and silver deposits, the famous warrior Hang Tuah and more. It is regarded as a spiritual place. One of the reputed origins for the name Ophir is the Greek word Ofi meaning snake and some say the mountain is guarded by legions of snakes.
The mountain is ideal for a myriad of outdoor activities with challenging mountain trails, icy waterfalls, and exotic flora and fauna, including many species of birds. At the relatively flat summit, which is 1,276 m above sea level, a panoramic view of the Straits of Melaka and even the Sumatran coastline can been seen on a clear day. Also, Sagil Waterfall is a popular picnic spot at the base of the mountain.
