Pulau Kukup National Park

The Pulau Kukup National Park is amongst the largest uninhabited mangrove forests available in the world. The place has received international recognition mostly because of the abundance of flora and fauna available here. The natural ecosystem of the island serves as a great lesson for kids bringing them close to nature.

This protected National Park which was declared as RAMSAR site in 2003 allows you to witness the amazing mangrove forests of the country. Different species of wild animals can be observed at the place which includes mudskipper, wild boars, monkeys and more.

According to local folklore, this place is served as the abode for 5 celestial princesses. However one of the princesses eloped with a sailor after they fell in love. The island of Kukup was set upon with a curse and soon the sea submerged the island. Even though many have tried settling on the island, they had to leave shortly as it is believed spirits inhabit the island.

The marine aquatic life of the surrounding area is the breeding grounds for different types of marine species like shellfish, crabs, shrimps, etc. You are bound to witness some of these aquatic species. The island is not connected to the town of Kukup and to get to the island, ferry services are available for the visitors.

The Pulau Kukup National Park is also home to numerous species of birds and provides the ultimate opportunity to bird lovers to witness different species in their natural habitat. Water birds like Grey Heron, Collared Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite and more are frequent visitors to the island.

Apart from that, the island also serves as a stop-over site for various species of migratory birds like Greenshank, Whimbrel, Redshank, Common Sandpiper, etc. Visitors who are eager to watch these magnificent birds should make it a point to visit the National Park between the months of February to September. Migration of raptors like Oriental Honey Buzzard can be observed in the period from September to December.
